5 STAR SERVICE Background Check Your Contractor

CARY NC: With the recession in full swing we need to watch every dime we have. Sometimes we get
homeowners who think it’s a good idea to go with a contractor that is 10% cheaper. Problem is the contractor
( so called contractor ) does not have a reference list and uses his cell phone as a business phone. We
always advise potential customers to check a couple of things out before they decide to go with a contractor.
Here is our list.
Reference list
Work Insurance
Is majority of there work new construction
Business phone as well as cell phone
Were they doing banking and for how long
Who are there material suppliers and phone numbers
Do they have an office separate from the home
Without an updated reference list it would be a good idea to stay away from the company. If they cant give
you at least 5 past customers what is the chance they have experience in this area. Do they have sufficient
funds for the job, do they have the manpower and will they show up if a problem arise in the future.
Insurance is needed in the event an accident occurs. Although not likely it is always a possibility. If something
or someone gets hurt on your property you can be sued and be liable for any damages. This is not
something any homeowner deserves. But it happens everyday. Beware.
If the company does a lot of new construction work the chances of them doing an expectable job on a retro
job is slim to none. On an older home you have to deal with plants bushes, railings, fences, electric light
fixtures, receptacles, daily garbage clean up, communication with workers and employees, job scheduling,
and an unforeseen expense that may come up. When you get an estimate the company should know what to
expect and there should not be any large charges for extra work. Companies with experience on retro work
know what to expect unlike new construction where nothing is hidden.
Those 3 things at the least will make for a better experience for the customer. You work hard for your money
and you deserve a job of excellence.
